Annie


Annie Yen-Ling Liu is Associate Professor of Music History, researcher, and PhD advisor at Peking University (Beijing, China). Dr. Liu is the author of A “New Athens” in the Nineteenth Century: Franz Liszt and the New German School (Southwest China Normal University Press, 2020) and An Only-Sound World: The Historical Aspects of Pure Music and the Ontological Thinking of Sound (Peking University Press, forthcoming).


Her research and teaching embraces music of both the Western and non-Western traditions, centering principally on German symphonic music from the eighteenth century to the late nineteenth century, experimental music after 1950, and contemporary Chinese electroacoustic music.


Dr. Liu previously taught at Soochow University and has also lectured on traditional and modern Chinese music as a visiting professor at the Université Grenoble Alpes (Grenoble, France). She is currently the Regional Editor for East Asia for Organised Sound (Cambridge University Press) and is a board member of the Electronic Music Foundation, EMF Institute.


LU Minjie (Iris)

Lu Minjie Ph.D., is the Associate Chair of the Music Engineering Department at Sichuan Conservatory of Music of China as well as a professor and master’s supervisor in electronic music composition. She served as a government-sponsored visiting scholar at the University of Oregon in the United States. She is also a judge for the National Art Fund. Her research focuses on computer music and the theory of new media art. She has independently led and completed projects funded by the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences Program, the National Arts Fund’s Program, the Southwest Music Research Center, and the Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory of Music Digital Intelligence. She has also served as principal investigator on sub-projects under the Major Academic (Experimental) Special Funding Program of the Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory of Philosophy and Social Sciences.


Minjie has published the academic monograph An Introduction to Interactive Electronic Music, the translated work Do: Notes about Action in the Creation of Musical Performance with Data-driven Instruments, and has co-authored five textbooks. She has also led the publication of award-winning compilations of electroacoustic music, including Flowing Colors and Rhythmic Light and Shadow.


Her electronic music compositions and academic papers have been selected and received awards at numerous domestic and international music festivals and competitions, including IAWM, ICMC, SMC, NYCEMF, SICMF, EMS, WOCMAT, CHIME, IRCAM Forum, and Musicacoustica-Hangzhou; she has twice won the top prize in the academic paper competition at the Musicacoustica-Beijing. Over the past five years, she has guided students to win nearly 50 awards in professional competitions both domestically and internationally.


Marc BATTIER

 


Marc Battier is a composer of instrumental and electronic music. After twenty years at Ircam, Paris, he became full professor of musicology at Sorbonne University in Paris. In 2017, he received the award of the 1000 Talents experts plan of China and joined for 5 years Shenzhen University (SZU, China) as distinguished professor; He established a computer music lab while at SZU. He was also visiting professor at the University of California at San Diego, UC Irvine, Université de Montréal, NYU and at the university of Music and Arts of Aichi, Japan. He has been assistant to John Cage (in Paris), François Bayle (at GRM), Karlheinz Stockhausen and Joji Yuasa (at IRCAM). He received commissions from France, China, Hungary, United States, Chile and Japan. His music was performed in France by soloists of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Itinéraire, 2E2M, GRM, Ircam…


He is a cofounding member of the International Computer Music Association (ICMA) and Electroacoustic Music Studies Network (EMS), and founder and director of EMSAN (2007), a network studying the electroacoustic music of East Asia. He is currently an ICMA director for Asia/Oceania and board member of Electronic Music Foundation. He gave lectures and master classes in Australia, Europe, the United States, Canada, Peru, Argentina, China (including being hired as a master in electroacoustic music of the DeTao Master Academy, Shanghai), Malaysia, Korea, Vietnam and Japan.


He has written mixed music for orchestra, chamber music, soloists and Asian instruments. He published many articles (including for The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments and The Grove Dictionary of American Music). He wrote several books and chapters on the history of electronic music. His latest book, Esthétique du son artificiel (Aesthetics of Artificial Sound), was published in France in 2024. In 2023, he published in China Computer Music in the 21st Century. History and Practice /21世纪计算机音乐创作 -- 历史与实践 (bilingual English-Chinese). His music is published by BabelScores.
