Abstract This paper presents an expanded extract from a previously unpublished essay entitled Ghost Semantics: An Enquiry into the Nature of Listening, Discourse and Value in the Acousmatic Arena (Fraser 2009). The selection put forward here introduces the concepts of associative and investigative processing, which are suggested as compositional aids.
